Having signed a pre-contract agreement with Liverpool in February, it seems as if Serbia international Milan Jovanovic is going to pull the plug on his proposed move to Anfield, in hope of signing for another top European force this summer.
Which begs the question, would Liverpool be better off without Jovanovic coming to the club if his attitude is to in fact jump ship in the last minute?
Jovanovic plays his club football in Belgium for Standard Liege, but his current contract with the club is set to expire this summer, and the striker has already agreed a pre-contract deal with Liverpool earlier in the year. However, this was before Rafa Benitez had left for the San Siro and Liverpool finishing outside of the Champions League places.
It is now believed that the 29-year-old forward is reassessing his options and suggests that he will make a u-turn and not head to the Premier League outfit this summer. Jovanovic is quoted to have said on Tuttomercatoweb.com:
“There is an agreement signed with Liverpool, but if either party wants to end it, it’s not impossible.”
It’s clear to see that Jovanovic’s words are not very convincing and doubt is creeping into the players mind about a move to Anfield. To some (if not all) Liverpool fans it may seem that the Serbian is not 100% certain on whether he wants to join the Merseyside club side or not. With that being said, do you fans really want someone who is not committed from the start?
A.C Milan, Juventus and Valencia were all believed to be tracking the forward before Liverpool announced the deal. There is speculation that the ex-Kop boss Rafa Benitez may even attempt to hijack the deal and take the striker to the San Siro in the summer instead.
To many (including me) it seems that Jovanovic is uncertain of his movements after his contract runs out this summer. His word to the media suggest that a move to Liverpool would be a wrong step in his career and is now looking to get out of the arranged deal. Of course a pre-contract deal can be broken if one of the two parties are not happy, and it looks like Jovanovic is having second thoughts.
He may still go to Liverpool next season, but after some doubt in the players mind, will the Liverpool fans want him at Anfield? Jovanovic does look to be a good striker. He’s quick and powerful, and would certainly do well in a Liverpool shirt and in the Premier League in general. However, Jovanovic signed a pre-contract deal with Liverpool when Benitez was in charge of the club and when the Reds were in the mix for the fourth spot.
Since May a lot has changed, Benitez has left to manage Inter Milan and Liverpool ended up finishing 7th in the Premier League…so, will the Serbian still want to go there? Doesn’t look like it. More importantly would the Liverpool faithful want him at the club after appearing to have a bad attitude? Surely its not the right kind of player Liverpool need at this present time.
