USWNT icon Becky Sauerbrunn received an unexpected tribute from French football legend Thierry Henry as part of a pre-match ceremony honoring her career before the USWNT's friendly against Jamaica. The 39-year-old had announced her retirement from football in December 2024 and Henry appeared in a surprise video message, where he praised Sauerbrunn's leadership, professionalism, and more. The emotional tribute was part of a larger ceremony celebrating Sauerbrunn's announced retirement from professional soccer.
"I just wanted to congratulate you on your career," Henry said. "What else to say? Two hundred-plus caps for the national team. Captain of the national team. Winning two World Cups….It's just outstanding…You've been a role model, and an example."
